# Technical Training

### Objectives

This programme consists of 6  modules from Year 2 of the Higher Certificate in Mechanical Engineering NFQ Level 6. To be eligible for this programme, students will have completed  a Year 1 of the Higher Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent programme.

### Content includes

It will be delivered through a blended learning approach of both online lectures and practical workshops in GMIT.  Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) will also allow students to gain exemptions from two modules.

Online section - Live and recorded web-based lectures:

Engineering Science (10 credits)
List the properties of solids, liquids and gases
Balance chemical equations
Explain valency and bonding
List the properties of heat and temperature and their influence on fluids and solids
State the gas laws
State the different modes of heat transfer
Calculate the final temperature of a mixture
Calculate the thermal expansion of solids and liquids
State Newton's First Law
State the definition of displacement, velocity and acceleration of a particle
Determine the condition of equilibrium for a particle
Represent the free body diagram of a particle in equilibrium
Calculate the displacement, velocity and acceleration of a particle in rectilinear motion

Mathematics 2 (5 credits)
Distinguish between an arithmetic and geometric progression, find the general term and sum of each
Explain the concepts of convergence and divergence of series
Obtain the Maclaurin series for standard functions
Recognise and differentiate implicit and parametric functions
Determine a derivative using logarithmic differentiation
Identify functions of several variables and determine their partial derivatives
Obtain total rates of change of functions of two variables
Approximate small errors in a function using partial derivatives
Integrate functions by the method of substitution, by integration by parts, by the use of partial fractions Evaluate the area between curves by integration
Determine the volume of a solid of revolution
Solve a first order differential equation by separation of variables
Solve a linear first order differential equation using an integrating factor
Recognise linear second order differential equations with constant coefficients and obtain their general solution

Statics & Dynamics (5 credits)
State the conditions for equilibrium of rigid body
State the Newton's Second Law
Determine the condition of equilibrium for a rigid body
Represent the free body diagram of a rigid body in equilibrium
Calculate and measure the displacement, velocity and acceleration vectors of a particle
Identify and measure the support reactions

Control Engineering (10 credits)
List the main components of hydraulic and pneumatic circuits
List the main components of electrical actuation
Define the characteristics of these components
Simulate basic pneumatic and electro-pneumatic circuits
build basic pneumatic and electro-pneumatic circuits
Describe the different functions of a PLC
List the symbols used in ladder logic programming
Use ladder logic to program a PLC
Troubleshoot basic faults

Mechanical Dissection (5 credits)

The credits for this module can be earned by Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

### Who should attend

Persons who have completed Year 1 modules of the Higher Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or have completed Year 1 of a Higher Certificate/ Degree in Mechanical Engineering in another third-level institute (or EU equivalent).
